Here’s to getting
BACK TO YOU
EMILY TATE, LPC, NCC, RPT™
Have you ever felt like you wish you knew how to help yourself or your kids with their big feelings? We all need a little help from time to time, and I’m passionate about helping individuals work through their feelings, traumas, and grief in a fun, playful way.
I’m Emily Tate, owner of Back to You Counseling Services, LLC in Richmond, Virginia. Prior to pursuing my LPC, I was an elementary school counselor for 20+ years and in that time had the privilege of helping many children and their families learn how to navigate developmental issues, depression, anxiety, ADHD, gender identity, traumas, learn about their brains, coping skills, and so much more, all while having fun and playing, which is the way kids (and adults, let’s be honest) learn, work, and process. That invaluable experience served as a launching point for diving in to ways I could help in a more in-depth, bottom up way that just wasn't possible in the schools. So here I am, ready to share those deep, healing modalities and watch you grow, Back to You.
I am licensed in Virginia and Maine. In Virginia, I provide in person and telehealth services. I provide telehealth only for clients located in Maine.

Play Therapy
With clients younger than 13 or 14 (and even adults too), talk therapy is not typically appropriate due to brain development and the natural way kids process the world around them. Play is kids’ natural language, and they naturally explore and figure out how the world works through imagination, challenge, boundaries, experimentation, and more.
Play Therapy includes everything from Sandtray (especially powerful for adults) to expressive arts to pretending, putting some distance and fun into working through your “stuff”.
WHY PLAY THERAPY?
Play works from a bottom up framework, helping the child develop a sense of safety first and allows them to work through their “stuff” in a less direct way than talking about it. Play involves the body, somatic movements, reenactment, and eventually resolution.
Play therapy is often non-directive in nature, meaning the child leads the play and often works through metaphor to explore and understand. So while adults may have specific issues to address, and I welcome those and need to know what is going on outside of session, our sessions will not typically consist of discussing outright issues. They will resolve on their own through play, and often in the order that the child’s brain needs to scaffold learning and behaviors.
Sometimes it may look to an adult that a child is regressing during play therapy; the opposite is actually true. When children are growing up, their brains naturally know what milestones they need to meet yet sometimes they may miss those in the course of life happening. So they’ll go back in time in play and repair the missing milestones, as well as working through missed opportunities and ruptures that occurred early on. Once these issues are resolved, they can proceed with higher level skills and milestones. The miraculous thing is that kids know instinctively how to do this. They may not know why, but they know they need a certain type of pressure or to reenact a certain behavior or situation and once they have processed it, symptoms related to that tend to resolve.
